Leonard was a lifelong resident of Central Minnesota.  He volunteered his services as a teenager to the United States Merchant Marines.  He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Ramona Kardash in 1948.  Together, they owned and operated the 12-mile tavern for 27 years.  This tavern is still in existence today.  After selling the tavern, Leonard worked for the Morrison County Sheriff's Department as a special deputy, retiring in 1994.

In his free time, he enjoyed carving and painting spearing decoys, as well as folk art.
